Effective Treatment for TMJ Problems and Headaches

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ), or jaw joint, connects the lower jaw to the skull. It is responsible for jaw movement and enables chewing, talking and yawning. Misalignment of the jaw, compulsive clenching of the jaw, injuries and missing teeth can lead to TMJ disorders.

A poorly functioning TMJ can cause a wide variety of symptoms, including tension headaches, jaw pain, earaches and neck and shoulder pain. Dr. Wenicur treats TMJ issues by using non-surgical treatment that can alleviate such problems.

Experienced TMJ Relief Provider

Dr. Wenicur has successfully helped many patients suffering with TMJ pain. To determine an appropriate treatment plan, Dr. Wenicur completes a full evaluation. She measures the degree that the mouth is able to open and close, she listens for clicking and popping and notes any deviation from the norm. She examines the jaw muscles to determine if there is dysfunctional jaw movement and measures how teeth come together when biting down.

Cutting-Edge Treatments

Once a diagnosis is made, Dr. Wenicur creates a customized treatment plan to adjust your TMJ for optimum alignment. She often uses a custom-made appliance, similar to a mouthguard, to reposition the jaw and jaw joint so they can function properly. In this way, the muscles can relax, and pressure on the jaw joint is relieved.

Dr. Wenicur may also use laser therapy or Dysport® to help ease the tension in the jaw joint which can relieve chronic headache and jaw pain.
